Before taking up the guitar, John Alac showed early musical interest and proficiency on both the piano and the trumpet. Upon discovering his passion for the classical guitar, he came to the University of Ottawa to study with Patrick Roux.  John received scholarships every year of his attendance and completed his Bachelor of Music degree (summa cum laude) in 2006 by winning the Faculty Plaque in Music for the highest standing in the department. He has held several teaching assistantships while studying in the Masters Program, and in 2007 won an Ontario Graduate Scholarship.

John has received prizes at regional and provincial levels of competition and performed with such notable artists as the Cantata Singers of Ottawa and Polish-Canadian soprano Maria Knapik. His performances have been described by critics as “haunting” while having “an admirable palate of tone and colour”. He has studied in masterclass with illustrious guitarists such as Pepe Romero, William Kanengiser, Fabio Zanon and Judicael Perroy. John also serves as an active board member of the Ottawa Guitar Society.
